What Do You Do to Help?
A first grade teacher asked her students, "What do you do to help at home?"
One little girl said, "I dry the dishes."
One of the boys said, "I sweep the floor."
Another one said, "I feed and water the dog."
Every student in the class had something to contribute except for one boy sitting in the back. The teacher looked at him and asked, "What do you do to help out at home?"
The boy replied, "I just try to stay out of the way."
God did not intend that any member of Christ’s body just stay out of the way. What if part of your physical body took on that attitude? Your body would constantly be trying to work around that part. Your life would be a mess.
What about the Lord’s church? What if every church member just stayed out of the way? A Gallup poll discovered that only 10% of church members are active in any kind of personal ministry in their church. 50% said that they have no desire or interest in serving in any ministry.
When a church is filled with this kind of member, the Spirit is quenched because it all becomes about three people, “Me, Myself and I.” When we study the person and work of the Holy Spirit we learn that he can only operate in people who are more interested in others than self.
Churches filled with people who are seeking opportunities to serve others are dynamic, Spirit filled and full of life! Churches who are the opposite are essentially spiritual zombies. They walk around imitating life, but have no joy or life inside.
Which kind of church member are you? If everyone in your church was like you what kind of church would it be? You know what kind of church and church member God is seeking to use. He’s not looking for the one who just stays out of the way. Is he looking for you?
Sunday we will continue to our series of messages titled The Dedicated Church Member, Outwardly Focused Christians with a message called I Will Gladly Serve based on Matthew 20:20-28 & Philippians 2:1-18.
