THANKFUL FOR MOMS

Thankful for Moms

Dr. James Dobson tells the story of a mother who was sick in bed. She had the flu. And her little daughter wanted so much to be a good nurse. So she brought mom an extra pillow and a magazine to read. She even showed up with a surprise cup of tea. The mother took a sip of tea, and said, ''Wow! I didn't even know you knew how to make tea!''

Her daughter replied, ''Oh, yes. I learned by watching you. I put some water in the pot, and then I put the tea leaves in and boiled the water. Then, I strained it into a cup. But I couldn't find the strainer, so I used the flyswatter instead.''

Shocked, her mother cried out, ''You what?!''

The girl calmly assured her, ''Oh, don't worry, Mom. I didn't use the new flyswatter. I used the old one.''

There is not a more difficult and challenging job than motherhood. You’ve seen the commercial of a young woman who is obviously pregnant discussing with another more mature woman how to charge her electric car. The young mother to be says, “That’s easy! I hope motherhood is that easy.” To which the older woman says, “It’s not!”

One of my brothers posted a picture on Facebook of he and my other two brothers, my dad and my mom around a table in a restaurant where they had just eaten for an early celebration of Mothers’ Day. One friend posted the reply, “Your poor mother.” Of course they would post that; her best son was not there.

Well, maybe that wasn’t it. Perhaps they realized the challenge of rearing 4 sons with no daughters, being the only female in the home. I can’t imagine how hard it was because she always made it look easy.

I’m looking forward to celebrating Mom’s this Sunday at First Christian Church. We will have beautiful gifts for every woman present and special gifts of the oldest and youngest mothers and for the mother with the most descendants present (including adoptive ones). We will also have a drawing for a special door prize. I will share a message titled Everyone’s First Preacher – Mom based on 2 Timothy 1:5 and Acts 16:1-3. It will be a fun time. After morning worship we will gather in the fellowship hall for a catered fried chicken dinner. I am thankful for Mothers and what they mean to us all. I look forward to seeing you there.

Thankful for moms,
Jon
