GETTING GOD'S ATTENTION

The Upward Look, by Jon Forrest
Getting God’s Attention

George Phillips of Mississippi, was going to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the shed. George opened the door to go turn off the light but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things.

He immediately phoned the police, who asked, "Is someone in your house?" and George said, "No", and explained the situation. Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available.

George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.

"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've just shot them all."

Then he hung up. Within a few minutes, three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed. One of the police officers said to George: "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"

To which George replied, "I thought YOU said there was nobody available!"

I would NOT recommend trying this to get the attention of the police at any time; but it was a good way to get our attention here today.

Thankfully, we don’t need to go to such extremes in order to get God’s attention. All that is required of us to contact him is to whisper the smallest prayer. James 5:16b says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

The context of that verse is about the power of prayer and anointing with oil in healing through faith. Following this verse, James uses the prophet Elijah as an example, “Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. (James 5:17-18)

This Sunday we will look at another prayer of this ordinary man who happened to be a prophet of God with a message titled One God based on 1 Kings 18:16-46. Come and join the FCC family to hear about this dynamic confrontation between this dedicated prophet and the 450 prophets of the false god, Baal.

Seeking God with you,
Jon
