FAITH TO LET GO

The Upward Look, by Jon Forrest
Faith to Let Go

A man fell off a cliff, but managed to grab a tree limb on the way down. He looked upward and yelled, “Is anyone up there?” A voice called to him,
“I am here. I am the Lord. Do you believe me?”
“Yes, Lord, I believe. I really believe,” the man said earnestly. “But I can’t hang on much longer.”
“That’s all right,” was the Lord’s reply. “If you really believe you have nothing to worry about. I will save you. Just let go of the branch.”
There was a moment of pregnant silence, then the man responded: “Is anyone else up there?”

There is an old Christian saying, “Let go and let God.” That is not scripture, but it is scriptural. We often attempt to handle things that belong to God on our own or at least we offer it to him and pull it back.

It’s one thing to claim that we believe God will answer our prayers, but then we pull it back and try to handle it ourselves before he has opportunity.

Mark 10:27 gives us this encouragement, “Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”
I
n Matthew 17 Jesus, Peter, James and John returned from the Mount of Transfiguration to find the rest of the disciples failing to cast out a demon. Jesus cast it out and the disciples asked him why they had failed. In verse 20, Jesus explained, He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.

True faith is handing your circumstances, troubles, needs and your very life over to Jesus and trusting him to work it out. Faith means letting God have it all.

This Sunday I will share a message from the life of Elijah about the sacrificial faith of a widow and how God provided for her needs and how it saved her life and that of her son. The sermon is titled Sacrificial Giving Rewarded based on 1 Kings 17:7-16. Come and see what God can do through and for you.

Trusting God with you,
Jon
