The Upward Look, by Jon Forrest
NAME THAT CHRISTMAS CAROL
Music has always played a huge part in the celebration of Advent and Christmas. While the Christmas stories in the New Testament say that the Angels declared, or announced the birth of Jesus, it has often been presented as singing. After all it was the heavenly host or heavenly choir of angels making the pronouncement. Why not? While some Christmas music is difficult to sing because too many words are crammed into a measure of music, they are still very special to us. One of my favorite parts of Christmas is taking a group out to carol at homes or in nursing homes or hospitals. No matter the quality of the singing, people are blessed by the effort and the words of the music. Our congregation has an all-church Christmas caroling event on December 17 this year.
Another blessing is the singing of carols at our Church-wide Christmas Dinner to be held on December 13. Then, on Christmas Eve, Christmas songs and carols are joined with readings and the like at our Christmas Eve Service on the evening of the 24th. Throughout the Advent season, Christmas music will be a special part of each Sunday worship service. Your singing will be beautiful to God, no matter what your neighbor thinks. What God thinks is much more important. He loves it when we worship him with our voices lifted up.
May God bless your moments of worship this season, even the singing. Below is a fun little test of your carol expertise. Don’t worry, God won’t be grading this. Below the 20 tests will be the 20 answers. Enjoy testing your carol acumen and singing praises to the King of kings and Lord of lords, the Everlasting Father and Prince of peace.
Merry Advent,
Jon
